There are many cooking shows on television these days. Some promote healthful, quick meals, and some show us how to make foods that are not good for us at all, just for fun. How do we decide what's good for us and what's not?
Your task is to watch a cooking show of your choice, either on TV or online. Take notes while you watch the show. You will write a review of the program including the following points: What do I enjoy/not enjoy about this program? What do I think about the chef, and why? Would I try this recipe? Why or why not? Is the food healthful, or not, and why or why not? Also comment on what the food is, what ingredients were used, and the chef's techniques. You must also include the title of the network, the title of the program, the name of the chef, and the date and time you watched it.
You should comment on each other's posts as well.
Date due: Nov. 3
Pace yourself! We have many projects going on at the same time. Be sure to work on all of them a little bit each day until they are completed!
Don't forget--Your reading logs are also due Nov. 3, your Social Studies Guide is due Nov. 3, and your My Plate project is due Nov. 7.
I watched one of Rachel Ray’s cooking episodes. Rachel was baking apple crisp from scratch. I absolutely love watching Rachel Ray because she keeps you interested and makes her meals easy to make using things you would probably have in your pantry. This recipe was so easy, all you needed was sugar, apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, butter, and nutmeg. Rachel said you didn’t have to measure anything and eyeballed the ingredients she used. She mentioned that the store bought recipes are stale and less healthy than homemade. I would definitely bake this recipe because it's yummy, easy, and fast to make. I watched this on Food Network, and the title of the program is called "30 Minute Meals with Rachel Ray." I watched this on 10-28-14 at eight-o-clock.
ReplyDeleteYum! I love apple crisp! Instead of sugar, I like to use honey or real, natural maple syrup to replace the sucrose with healthier fructose. My favorite apples are Minnesota Honey Crisp, of course!
ReplyDeleteI watched the episode All-Star Desserts, I found that Giada De Laurentiis's Italian Doughnuts was the easiest and most delicious recipe. I love how Giada is very interactive, and includes tips and tricks in each episode. She mixes easy with a bit of challenging, and helps you produce something amazing. This recipe was very easy, it only had four ingredients. Pizza dough if you want it health you can make it yourself (with whole wheat flour), sugar, cinnamon, and oil. If you want a healthier alternative you could bake the doughnuts, and use honey instead of sugar to coat them. I would make this recipe, because it is easy and quick. People wont even know you made it in less than ten minutes.

DeleteBeing one of my favorite chefs, I chose to watch a healthy dessert demonstrated by Giada De Laurentiis from Giada at Home. Giada was showing us how to make her ultimate fig and almond tart. It is a very simple, basic treat, but yet, a delicacy. The main reason I enjoy watching Giada is because she interacts with her watchers/audience. Also, she gives away a lot of baking/tips that simplifies the cooking process. Additionally, she gives many options and substitute ingredients for her dishes. The ingredients used were for this tart were flour, sugar, lemon, sea salt, butter, almond paste, mascarpone cheese, vanilla extract, honey, figs and apricot jam. I would without doubt try this recipe because it is healthy, efficient and quick. I like the way Giada reduced the sugar and added honey to the mixture for it makes the sweet desert a healthy natural one too. One tip she used was spreading apricot jam over the figs at the end before baking to give it that glaze as well as a sweet taste. I watched this on 10/28/14 at 5:30. I surely enjoy watching Giada!!!
ReplyDeleteI watched the episode yesterday but wrote my review today...
DeleteI watched one of Guy Fieri's episodes on how to make homemade veggie pizza. I think this recipe is delicious, simple, and most importantly healthy! The ingredients he used for his pizza were chives, olives, Yukon gold potatoes, and tomatoes. This might not sound delightful, but it is delicious! The fact that he made his own dough from scratch blew me away! The best part about this pizza is that he uses natural vegetables, not frozen vegetables. I watched this on TV during one of the episodes of " Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives". I enjoyed this program because it teaches you basic ways on how to make your own home cooked meals! I think that Guy Fieri is an awesome chef for multiple reasons. He's funny, he's enthusiastic, as well as very passionate about his cooking. I think that being passionate about your own cooking is great because you fell calm, and serene while you cook. I would definitely try this dish because, like I said, its delicious, simple, and most importantly, healthy! I would also like to try this recipe just for fun! I would do it to have experience for future recipes I make that are similar to this one. This recipe is very healthy. The potatoes produce potassium, tomatoes produce lycopene, chives produce healthy herbs, and the olives produce great oils for your body. I hope you try this awesome dish for 3 reasons! Its delicious, simple, and most importantly, healthy! I watched this show at 7:20 PM, 10/29/14, The network is Food Network, The program is "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives", and the chef's name is Guy Fieri. I hope you try this recipe at home because it is delicious, simple, and most importantly, healthy!

I watched the show “The Kitchen” on Food Network which is a show that gives tips on how to make efficient, simple home cooked meals. The recipe that I really like and will make very soon is from Geoffrey Zakarian So when I watched it, they were showing you how to make Pesto-Rubbed Baked Salmon with Smashed Cucumber and Green Apple Salad. This is a delicious meal that takes about 30 minutes to cook and 10 minutes to prep.
ReplyDeleteThe fish is to be coated with a sprinkle of salt and pepper on both sides. After that they make the pesto which includes pesto, mustard and lemon juice together and salt and pepper. Then you spoon the mixture over the top of the salmon, putting it in the oven afterwards for 8-10 minutes. Meanwhile you cut the cucumber which they then transfer to a mixing bowl and sprinkle a little salt over them. Add the dates and apples for mixing. Additional you can add pine nuts, olive oil, mint and lemon juice; season with salt and pepper, and toss the veggies until they are combined. combined.
This is an easy and healthy recipe that includes both vegetables, fruits, and a great source(s) of protein. “The Kitchen” is a great show that includes various tips for your way around the kitchen and easy, delicious recipes that will make you beg for another home cooked meal.
I don’t really watch cooking shows but my mom usually gets Indian recipes from a cooking show called Vah Reh Vah (it means wow in Urdu) by a chef called Vah. I visited his website www.vahrehvah.com and I saw that he also makes American dishes and was interested in making Almond cookies.
ReplyDeleteI like this program because it has a huge variety of dishes and from the recipes I tasted they are pretty good. The chef also has good traditional recipes but he should cut down on the oils and butter which he in my opinion puts too much of. He also invites kids to help with the cooking in “Kid Recipes” which this was. I think I will try this recipe because it looks pretty easy. I think it is healthy if you don’t spread butter on top of the cookies. I watched this on November 1, 2014 at 3:00and this recipe is on the website and his shows are also on YouTube.
If i am not mistaken, the chef's name is Sanjay Thumma, not Vah....
DeleteThe cooking episode I watched was cupcake wars. I thought it was very interesting because for one of the rounds, they had to use strange ingredients such as churros hot dogs caramel corn beer and other things that you find at the ballpark .At first I had HUGE doubts on these people but they proved me wrong and made these ingredient into yummy cupcake. One thing I didn't like about cupcake wars is that all the constants owned a cupcake shop. Another thing that I don't like is that the cupcakes aren't really healthy. They put WAY too much suger into there cupcakes making this a sometime treat.
ReplyDeleteAs a star on Food Network, Sandra Lee is known for her delicious treats and quick bites. As I watched her show “Sandra Lee”, she was making Blue Cheese Pear Bites. I especially enjoyed this episode because of the simplicity of the dish. She used two tablespoons of butter, sliced fresh pears, half a cup of onions, two teaspoons of store bought lemon juice, blue cheese, toasted pumpernickel (dark rye bread), and white chocolate. Sandra Lee has many tricks up her sleeve when she’s in the kitchen. As canned pears melt in a heated pan, she said it was important to make sure that the pears used were fresh because they have a harder texture. Although she did include a few healthy ingredients, I do not consider this dish to be a very salubrious one. Most of the ingredients used have lots of fat such as the butter and the white chocolate. In addition, she used store bought lemon juice rather than freshly squeezed. As a savory desert, I would definitely try to make these bites. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t recommend eating this snack if one is on a diet to improve their health.

I watched Food Network's Cupcake Wars. It was season 6 episodes 5 and there were 4 champions competing with eachother. In the first round the task was to create a cupcake using the Food Network star's favorite flavors, which show their personality and put it into a cupcake. I thought the cupcakes were very delicious and the champions came up with very unique and creative flavors in such less time. Rebecca got out in the first round.
ReplyDeleteIn the second round there were only 3 champions left and they had to create a cupcake with showed their baking life from where they started to where they are now. I thought that was very interesting because I got to know about the bakers and how they started their journey to become a cupcake champion. Jane however got out in the second round.
In the final round there were only 2 champions left! The task was to create a cupcake by changing the flavors they used in the first two rounds to match a Food Network star's look and style. I didn’t really know who the Food Network stars were, but I got to know them by hearing what the champions were saying about them. They had to bake about 1,000 cupcakes, which will be eaten in a Foot Network part by all the Food Network stars. The champions had to design displays, which I thought were very good looking. Kary however lost that round even though I thought her creations were awesome. The overall winner was Kevin from Minnesota. He won 50,000 dollars. I really liked his display and his smore’s cupcake was my favorite.

I watched cupcake wars on Netflix at 9:30 am, Sunday.I liked that in the 3 rounds every time they were determined to make a better cupcake then the first one ,but i didn't like that they had to share negative comments about the cupcake to the bakers.I thought the bakers were creative because they thought of great ideas for the cupcake decoration.i wouldn't use the recipe because it is not healthy.overall i think the show is good.
ReplyDeleteWhat I watched was a competition called Chopped. I watched it on food network, and I really liked it. There were three rounds and for chefs. Each time, they had different ingredients to make a dish out of them. There were 3 judges and a guy named Ted Allen who was the one who watched the time, and told the chefs what to do. I am only going to talk about the winner who was Tabb Singleton and what he cooked in the last round. First, what I enjoyed about this was that I really like watching competitions, and that I felt like they were going to make another chef win because of the way they would talk to her about her food, but they were still fair to all chefs. On the end, it turned out that Tabb won. I also like how the chefs were nervous a little, but when they lost, they were still proud of themselves. What I think about chef Tabb was that he shouldn’t just want to win to get the money, and to not look like a loser in front of his town. I thought that he should want to win to make his family proud, and to have fun. What I liked about the other chefs when they knew that they lost, they were sad, but still happy because they knew the tried there best. In the last round, the two chefs, Tabb and Virginia, had to use chickpea flour, raspberries, ricotta salata, and rose water syrup. I think I would try this dessert because it looks good but it doesn’t look so healthy for both Virginia and Tabb. I think it isn’t so healthy because they have a lot of sugar. Tabb did sweet chickpea grits with caramel almonds using chickpea flour, raspberries, ricotta salata, and rose water syrup. Virginia made socca pancakes with raspberry sherbet disk using chickpea flour, raspberries, ricotta salata, and rose water syrup. What I learned about Virginia’s techniques for cooking was to always have extra of tstuff that she us using, because in one of her cooks, it got a little burned, but she had extra of that and she was able to make the dish delicious.

DeleteRee Drummond is known for her hearty meals she makes for her family. Her show is called “The Pioneer Women” and in the episode I watched Alex her daughter was taking horseback riding lessons from her couch so as a thank you gift she made him his favorite dessert, silk pie. Silk pie is basically chocolate custard with a graham cookie crust. I must say it did look good, but it was very rich as this is only meant to be once a month dessert as it does have a lot of butter and sugar but nevertheless still delicious. Next she made a quick Italian salad by cutting the cherry tomatoes in half and preparing her lettuce by washing them and cutting them into half inch long strips. She also takes out the black oil cured olives from the jar and rinses them to take out excess salt and sets them aside to put on top of the finishes salad. She then made her dressing by placing oil, mayonnaise, a few drops of balsamic vinegar, half a lemon ,one garlic cloves peeled, a big bundle of flat leaf Italian parsley and a pinch each of salt and pepper in the blender and combining it together. You can also put in crushed red pepper flakes if you like your salad a bit spicy. Place the salad dressing in the bottom of your salad bowl and place the head of lettuce, sliced tomatoes and thinly sliced red onions. Mix together and add olives to decorate. Easy to make and can impress your friends.
ReplyDeleteNext she made a supreme burger. She used eighty percent lean beef to make it juicy enough but not dry and leathery, and mixed with it salt, pepper, oregano, and crushed garlic. Mix till combined but not too much to make them rubbery .divide meat mixture into four equal pieces and heat up grill or you can do it in an indoor grill. Once hot, put in pan and cook for 3 minutes on each side. In the last minute put on 2 slices of provolone cheese and cover the pan and let it continue cooking. Then before serving slice the tomatoes, red onions, and sliced red pepper, place on top of the burgers and warm. Warm the buns and serve.
Last but not least a very healthy and easy recipe for fruit pops. She placed a pot on the stove and placed in it water and sugar to make simple syrup. Once done place the syrup in a blender and add in your choice of fresh fruit, you can use frozen but fresh is preferred. Ree used pineapple and strawberries. Put one of the 2 mixtures half way up the Popsicle mold and freeze then put the other mixture and freeze. This way you will get a striped pattern. Ree teaches us how to make easy recipes and the little tips in the kitchen that help it move smoother and faster so you can spend more time with you family rather than laboring over your dinner.

ReplyDeleteI watched Sunny Anderson on Food Network at 10/26/14 at 5:00pm making New Orleans style French toast with her own syrup(her Sunday breakfast back in the day). It was a simple yet delicious recipe. What I enjoyed about the chef was that the chef was so experimental and didn’t care too much about how much fat she was putting in the toast and the syrup. She is very humorous and made jokes about how she cooks and how she pronounces food names. She is very particular about her ingredients and only uses fresh garden grown fruits. She gives advice on which ingredient brands to use exactly how much proportion each ingredient to put in. Sunny A. also tells everyone watching Food Network to go to New Orleans and try their cultural food
ReplyDeleteAlton Brown is known to be a nerdy, professional and a somewhat experimental man. I watched his new show called “Cutthroat kitchen” on the Food Network. I watched the episode called “Superstar Sabotage”. It was four well known chefs, Aarti Sequeira, Jeff Mauro, Michael Psilakis and Chef Susan Feniger competing to go to the final round where they will compete with the other three finalists of Superstar sabotage to win $75,000 for their charity of choice. Each chef gets $25,000 to use to buy items or sabotages, hence the name Cutthroat Kitchen. They can then tell anyone they are competing against to use the sabotage.
ReplyDeleteIn the first round they had to cook a salmon dinner. They had 60 seconds to go to the pantry and pick out all the ingredients. The n Alton auctioned off a replacement for everyone’s salmon for canned salmon, the bones of salmon and salmon jerky which was sold to Michael for $1,000. He also auctioned of a treadmill cooking station that was sold to Chef Michael again for $2,500. Once they started cooking Chef Aarti is making a piece of salmon head with cumin and other Indian spices. Chef Mauro got the jerky so he rehydrated it in boiling water and is making a hash with it, but halfway through the battle Alton auctions out another sabotage, the worst of them all, to switch stations halfway through the battle. Chef Michael wins the auction and lets Chef Mauro and chef Susan switch stations. Since the two chefs switched stations now Chef Susan has the jerky and chef Mauro has the canned salmon. In the end of the taste test chef Susan was eliminated, but they donated $25,000 to her charity.
In the second round they had to make Kung Po chicken. Chef Michael forgets his chicken though. The first sabotage is the mallet swing contest. The higher the puck rises the better the chicken item is. Chef Mauro wins the auction and gives it to Chef Aarti. The next item for auction is an upside down wok to cook on. Chef Aarti wins the auction and gives it to Mauro. They have a very heated second round and they all present their plates on time. Although in the end chef Mauro got eliminated.
In the last and final round they cooked French toast. Alton has many really hard sabotages but the first item he had to auction was the bread on four French onion soups to replace the other persons bread. Chef Aarti wins it and gives it to Michael. Chef Aarti goes the Indian route and makes a Kara masala while Chef Michael goes the traditional route. He makes a zabaglione or an Italian custard sauce. In the end Arties creativity and her different route made her get the win!
I enjoy watching Cutthroat kitchen because of how difficult the sabotages are but how each person deals with it differently. I also enjoy watching Alton Brown’s reactions to each person’s bids or their different techniques they use to get around each sabotage he throws at them. Overall Alton is a very funny person to watch but you can’t help but learn whenever you watch his shows because he brings science in to it. I learned how glyedin and gluten work just by watching one episode of one of his shows called “Good Eats”. I would not do any of these recipes though because of the level of skill they all need to execute the dish fully. I would try the French toast though because they seemed easy enough. Overall this is one of my favorite cooking shows to watch and I found it a very difficult competition to win too. I also feel like this show brings out the mischief and dangerous side of everyone that chooses to go into it, it is also one the shows that offer you a lot of money….. Well whatever you are left with in the end of the competition !

I think that the show was pretty good it was a fast and easy to make meal. I feel so confident that I can cook that meal because of how easy the chef made it look. The food was very healthy. It looked like a balanced meal with a little of meat and lots of vegetables and spices. One of the chefs techniques was as the water and other stuff was boiling or getting cooked she acted as if it wasn't there ,and with that time she did other parts of the dish.

Deletetoddy I watched cooking with Rachel ray online. the ingredients she used was shrimp, red pepper , pasta ,olive oil and garlic.
Today I watched "Masterchef Australia" on youtube. It was a very engaging show due to all the suspense. The way it worked was, that there were a group of contestants that cooked the best dishes they can and at the end, the judges taste to see which dishes are the best. Those that are the best, will get to move on to the next round. Those who were the worst will go back home. But there is a catch...every contestant has a mystery box that contains the mandatory ingredients that they need to use in their dishes.
ReplyDeleteThere was a boy who's name wasn't shown was cooking a cake that involved the mandatory cooking ingredients from the mystery box: bananas, cherries, grapes, chocolate, wine, and a 1000 sprinkles. When the judges came to test his cake, they loved it and brought him into the final four!
I really loved the show because there were a lot of suspenseful scenes. I think the chef is very creative due to all of the ingredients he had to use that didn't not mix in with each other but only in his dish. I would try that recipe if I had time because I would really want to eat a dessert made by myself instead of chocolate cookies. Obviously the food is not healthy due to all of the fattening ingredients but its not like I have a cake every month and week.

I watched a show called 30 minute meals. Rachael Ray was cooking mashed sweet potatoes. She chopped pieces of sweet potato and put them in boiling water. She put half a stick of butter in a pot and she put it on medium heat. She put sliced banana in the pot. She put fresh orange zest in the pot. Then she cut the orange in half and squeezed it in the pot. She then added the sweet potatoes in the pot. She put about a half of a cup of brown sugar in the pot. She then added nutmeg to the food. After that she put about half a cup of chicken stock. Then she started to mash every thing in the pot. The recipe looks delicious. The recipe seems really easy to make.

DeleteI enjoyed it because I think it is a quick and easy meal to make and it also looks delicious and plus I like seafood. I think she is a good chef because she is smart and knows how to cook well plus she knows how to cook fast and efficiently. She also had many new techniques I did not know about, but I think they are nice tricks.I think the food is healthy because it has shrimp which is protein and the spaghetti has grains and vegetables. Though I think she put too much oil in the recipe she made. I watched a show called 30 minute meals by Rachel Ray. She shows you how to make spicy shrimp spaghetti Alia Otto which are one of her favorite foods that are Italian. The first step she does is filling up a pot with hot water for the pasta. After she puts the hot water on the stove she goes and gets easy peel shrimp where you only have to slide of the skin which only takes a few minutes to do for lots of shrimp. Once she is done she puts the pan on the stove so it could be warm once she puts shrimp inside the pot. Then she gets other ingredients to cut or chop which are lemon, garlic, and crushed red peppers. Then she gets a tool called the micro-clain and rubs the lemon on it and the shrimp is under. When she rubs the lemon only the zest of the lemon gets on the shrimp to make it taste fresh. Since only part of the lemon is used she cuts the lemon in half and squeezes the lemons. Then she chops the parsley and sprinkles it all over the shrimp for the fresh taste. Then she chops the garlic into tiny bits and only uses a little garlic to sprinkle on the shrimp and then a pinch of crushed red pepper. Then she puts olive oil on top of the shrimp and also a little pepper. Then she mixes everything up and puts only a few shrimp at a time so the shrimp cook faster. Alter that the pot of water that she puts on the stove with water; she then puts about a pound of pasta. After that she says that you should mix the pasta until it submerges into the water. While that happens the shrimp is done cooking. Then she says that she will cool down the pan to low so she can use it for the pasta later. Then she starts working on the sauce and gets anchovies. Then she use the pan, puts some olive oil and then all the garlic plus crushes red peppers. Then she says for the anchovies you should put two per person so that depends on the amount of people who are going to eat. After that she removes the pot from the stove and shakes it and then mixes it with the sauce. Then she adds the final touch which is the chopped parsley.
